

They still use the same slightly stylised art style, and aren’t intended to be photorealistic, but Chris now leaves footprints in the snow and there’s some great fantasy sequences where his imagination takes over and the whole look of the game changes.

You’re not given any particular goal, other than waking your dad up if it he gets drunk in front of the TV, and so are free to pursue any of half a dozen objectives, such as a building a costume for yourself, blowing up a snowman, and stealing the keys to the car. Captain Spirit is only an hour or two long but it’s structure is much more open-ended than the previous games. What you get instead is a hint at new gameplay features and a slightly new direction. There’s not much else about the story we can tell you without spoilers, but to be honest there isn’t much else in the game anyway in terms of plot, with no real clues as to what Life Is Strange 2 might be about and no link to the original game beyond a few Easter eggs – such as an art book by Mark Jefferson and the fact that Chris’ mum went to Blackwell Academy. The character set-up bears some relation to Chloe’s situation in the first game, except as a pre-teen Chris is considerably less cynical and rebellious.
